The nightmarish scene happened at the intersection of Broadway and Academy Street in Manhattan. Eyewitness News reporter Jen Maxfield is in Inwood with the details. Eyewitnesses say it was like something out of the Wild West. At 1:15 Saturday afternoon, a young man started shooting down Broadway and an innocent 61-year-old woman was caught in the gunfire. Under a Broadway sidewalk bench, three shell casings from an automatic weapon lie after the shoot-out. Up the block, a pool of the victim's blood could be seen. Not far away, clothes believed to belong to the shooter. Police have cordoned off the block near Academy Street after a wild afternoon shoot-out. "They don't look when they shoot. They don't care," said Luz Bermudez. Police say two groups of men were arguing on the Broadway sidewalk when one man pulled out a gun and started firing. Instead of hitting a rival group, one bullet hit a 61-year-old woman in the side as she was walking outside P.S. 176. After the shooting, eyewitnesses say a group of bystanders chased the shooter into the Dyckman Street subway station. One of the bystanders stopped at the Broadyke Butcher Shop for a 12-inch carving knife. "One of the fellas ran into the store as I turned around, grabbed one of my knives, and then ran down the subway," said a shop worker. "And then when he came back up, he handed me the knife back about five minutes later and apologized." Police are questioning the managers of a nearby apartment complex to see if a surveillance camera will reveal any clues. Inwood business owners can't get over how a beautiful Saturday afternoon turned into this. "The neighborhood seems to be stable, it's not one of these Wild West neighborhoods," said the man working in the butcher shop. "It's kind of a shock to me." The 61-year-old victim is in Harlem Hospital in serious but stable condition. Police continue to look for the shooter.
